history

In Sept 2005 Angus MacColl, in conjunction with Netherlorn Piping Society, had an idea to form a youth pipe band to serve the Oban & North Lorn area. When first formed there were just eight interested pipers however this quickly grew such that in November 2006 Oban & Lorn Youth Pipe Band Association was formed to cope with the growing interest, administration and fundraising.

The band performed in their first competition in August 2008 placing 9th out of 23 bands at Cowal. Building on this success they went on to become Novice Juvenile World Champions in August 2010.

In 2011, with there being so many registered players, it was decided to form two competing bands, a Novice Juvenile band and a Juvenile band. At present there are 59 registered players with Oban High School Pipe Band.

During 2012 and 2013, both bands competed at many competitions including majors in Annan, Belfast, Forres, Glasgow and Cowal.

Although competitions are the main focus for the band, just as important are the many community and school events that they are invited to support through performance. The band is funded solely through fundraising and donations and new ideas are constantly being sought by the committee.

In February of 2012, with the support of local musicians and artists, the band held its first fundraising concert in the Corran Halls. The success of this evening exceeded all expectations and as such the decision was made to hold a further concert in 2013. To everyone’s delight this evening was again a huge success, with the event being a complete sell out.
